Anaesthesia / Intensive care

Anaesthesia eliminates the sensations and pain associated with surgical, medical or obstetric procedures. It also reduces post-operative pain. Thanks to the close collaboration between our surgeons and anaesthetists on site, Hôpital Privé Sud Corse is able to provide you with optimum care. Ensuring your safety and well-being is our priority.

Questions about your anaesthetic in Ajaccio

Hôpital Privé Sud Corse offers a range of anaesthetics depending on the medical or surgical procedure to be carried out:
  • General anaesthesia
  • Loco-regional anaesthesia
  • Local anaesthesia + sedation
  • Sedation without local anaesthetic
  • Local anaesthesia + sedation

Several techniques can be chosen in consultation with your anaesthetist and surgeon.

Hôpital Privé Sud Corse offers two techniques: injection anaesthesia and mask anaesthesia.

You will be offered the technique best suited to your procedure.

General anaesthesia is a state comparable to sleep, produced by the injection of medication via the infusion, and/or by breathing. General anaesthesia causes you to lose consciousness during the surgical procedure.

Local anaesthesia allows nThe only part of your body that can be put to sleep is the part on which the operation will be performed.

You remain conscious but feel no pain.

The principle is to block the nerves by injecting a local anaesthetic. It is therefore possible to numb an isolated forearm or leg, for example.

Spinal anaesthesia and epidural anaesthesia are two particular forms of loco-regional anaesthesia, where the anaesthetic is injected close to the nerves that exit the spinal cord in your back. They enable both legs and the lower abdomen, for example, to be put to sleep.

Local anaesthesia may be offered on its own or in conjunction with a general anaesthetic.

This examination should be carried out at least 48 hours before your operation.

If you are taking antiaggregants or anticoagulants, the visit must take place 10 days beforehand.

During this consultation, the anaesthetist assesses the risks associated with the planned operation and those associated with anaesthesia, taking into account your history and state of health.

He will explain the type of anaesthetic that will be used and how post-operative pain can be relieved.

Following this consultation, further tests (blood tests, electrocardiogram, cardiac ultrasound, consultation with another specialist, etc.) may be required.

The anaesthetist will give you an anaesthetic information and consent form to fill in and return on the day of your admission.

An anaesthetic consultation is compulsory for all patients undergoing surgery or endoscopic examination, whatever the type (general anaesthetic, loco-regional anaesthetic, local anaesthetic and sedation).

This enables us to assess the risks, define the anaesthetic technique to be used and give you all the information you need.

Depending on your specialty (orthopaedics, urology, digestive and visceral surgery, vascular surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, etc.), your surgeon will refer you to a dedicated anaesthetist's practice.

The anaesthetist you meet during the consultation will not necessarily be the one who looks after you during the operation.

Anaesthesia, whatever its type, is carried out in a room equipped with a the right equipment, adapted to your case and checked before each use.

At the end of the operation, you will be monitored continuously in a post-operation monitoring room (SSPI).

During anaesthesia and your stay in the intensive care unit, you will be cared for by a team of professionals under the medical responsibility of an anaesthetist-intensive care physician.
